Black Backgrounds: RGB vs CMYK

Due to our production process, we are currently unable to achieve a true black background on our fresheners.

Because our cardstock is fragrance-infused, and because of the high volume of black ink required to cover large background areas, black prints as a slightly lighter, charcoal tone rather than a deep, true black. This is not a defect — it is simply a limitation of how our product is made, and we want to be upfront about it so you can make the right decision for your design.

Why does this happen?
We print using CMYK — a color system that uses four physical ink layers: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black. Unlike a screen, which creates black by turning off all light, CMYK black is built from ink on an absorbent material. On its own, the black ink channel produces a softer, warmer tone than what you see on screen. When you add the absorbency of fragrance-infused cardstock and the ink volume required for full-coverage backgrounds, the result is a charcoal black rather than a true jet black.

What this means for your design

  • If a true black background is essential to your design, we recommend changing colors or adjusting expectations before ordering
  • A deep charcoal background is what you can expect — which still looks great for most designs
  • If you are unsure how your design will print, order a sample before committing to a bulk order
